How to Choose a Research Peptide Supplier: A Verification Checklist

Choosing a research peptide supplier is a documentation problem, not a branding one. The vendors worth using can show you evidence for what's in the vial; the ones to avoid ask you to take it on faith. Below is a checklist you can run against any supplier, followed by the red flags that should end the conversation.

The verification checklist

Run every candidate supplier through these items. A strong supplier clears all of them.

1. Lot-matched certificates, not sample COAs.

The certificate should reference the specific lot number that will be printed on your vial, not a "representative" or "sample" certificate. Purity is measured per production run, so an unmatched COA verifies nothing about the material you receive.

2. Third-party testing, with the lab named.

The COA should come from an independent laboratory, and that laboratory should be named on the document. "In-house tested" is a claim; a named external lab is evidence. Recognized independent labs in this space are findable entities with their own contact details.

3. HPLC purity plus the chromatogram.

Look for the purity percentage (≥99% is excellent; 95–98% is standard research-grade) and, ideally, the chromatogram image itself. A single dominant peak on a flat baseline says more than the number alone.

4. Mass-spec identity confirmation.

HPLC proves purity, not identity. The certificate should also report a mass-spectrometry result matching observed mass to theoretical mass. Purity without identity is half a verification.

5. LAL endotoxin result.

A thorough COA reports a bacterial-endotoxin result via the LAL (Limulus Amebocyte Lysate) assay, ideally referenced to USP <85>. Its presence signals a more complete analytical workup.

6. Current dates.

Certificates should be dated. An undated or stale certificate is weaker evidence than a recent, dated one.

7. Clear research-use-only framing.

Legitimate research suppliers present material as research-use-only and keep documentation, not outcome claims, at the center. That framing is a signal of a supplier operating in the right lane.

8. Published, not on-request.

The strongest signal is a supplier that publishes its COAs openly, so you can read the evidence before you buy rather than after.
